Appliances are typically large electrical devices used in homes and businesses. They can range from complex structures like an oven to simpler structures like a desk lamp. Appliances aren’t limited to electricity; other common appliances include microwaves, dishwashers, dryers, furnaces, air conditioners, etc.
The average life expectancy of an electrical appliance is six years. If you take proper care of your appliances, they can last longer than that! You should always read the instruction manual to make sure you’re using it correctly, but apart from that, here’s a list of things you can do:
1) Use a Water Softener
Water softeners remove minerals from your water and replace them with a salt solution. This prevents mineral buildup in appliances that use elements to heat the water. If you don’t have a water softener but use tap water, fill a pitcher with water and let it sit for 24 hours so any particles can settle on the bottom and the minerals and sediment can be removed.
2) Clean Your Refrigerator’s Coils
The refrigerator is one of the most important inventions and one of the most energy-consuming appliances in your home. The best way to make it last longer is to keep it clean. Clean out any spills, take out all food and packs of ice, and clean the coil at the back or behind doors. You can also vacuum it with a brush attachment instead of using water.
3) Air Conditioner Maintenance
Air conditioners use a lot of electricity and should be maintained properly. Keep the filters clean because if they’re restricted, the air conditioner will have to work harder to cool your home. Keeping them free of dust also keeps your utility bill lower.
4) Furnaces
If you have a furnace, maintain it properly. This will ensure it’s running at peak performance, so your home is always at the ideal temperature. If you live in an area with dust or pollen, do service checks regularly to ensure no blockages in the filters or vents.
5) Washing Machine Maintenance
If you have a front loader, check on top of the machine to see if there’s any water or gunk. If so, clean and vacuum it out and perform maintenance checks as per the manufacturer’s instruction for optimum performance. For top-loading machines, make sure the washer is level, and your clothes aren’t damaged by using cold water whenever possible. Use a gentle cycle and low heat.
6) Oven Maintenance
To make your oven last longer, clean the inside of it thoroughly with water and baking soda. Please don’t use harsh chemicals because they can damage the oven or cause an off-flavor in your food. For glass-top stoves, always preheat the stove before putting anything into it, and don’t use high heat. To clean the oven glass, simply throw a sheet of newspaper on it and wipe it away.
